Hundred-Year Old Sugar Cookie Recipe

1 cup butter, softened
1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
2 whole eggs
1/4 cup light corn syrup
3 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon vanilla
Oven:  375°

Sift together flour, baking powder and salt twice.  In mixing bowl, cream butter, working in sugar until well blended.  Add eggs, syrup and vanilla and beat until smooth and fluffy.  Gradually stir in flour mixture until well mixed.  Dough will be very sticky and must be refrigerated at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.  Roll dough 1/4-inch thick, sheet with extra sugar, cut and bake on ungreased cookie sheet 2 inches apart about 5-9 minutes, being careful not to over bake. Cool slightly before removing to racks for cooling and frosting, if desired.
