String Beans Almandine

2 16 ounce cans French cut green beans
2 teaspoons sugar
2 tablespoons butter
1 cup diced fresh mushrooms
¼ cup butter
½ cup flour
Salt and pepper to taste
About 2 cups milk or light cream
1 cup blanched slivered almonds
Bread crumbs
Oven:  350º

Drain the beans thoroughly.  Sauté the mushrooms in the 2 tablespoons butter, then add sugar and beans and toss to blend.  Set aside.  In saucepan melt butter, whisk in flour with salt and pepper to make a light colored roux, then beat in milk and cook until slightly thickened.  Add to bean mixture, stirring together gently. Stir in almonds, place in a casserole dish or quiche pan, and top with bread crumbs.  Bake about 30 minutes until thickened and bubbly. Will serve 6 to 8 people.
